This Privacy Policy describes how your personal information is collected, used, and shared when you use the Wildergeist application ("the App"), operated by Wildergeist Inc. ("we," "us," or "our").
We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your personal information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

We share your personal information only in the following circumstances. This section also describes one case in which your browser, rather than the App, may transmit data to a third party.
Your GPS coordinates are sent to a third-party geocoding service to determine your approximate place name (e.g., "Bedford, NS"). Only coordinates are sent; no personal identity information is included.
Your approximate location is sent to third-party weather services to retrieve current conditions while you are using the App.
Your photos are sent to a third-party plant identification service to assist with species recognition. Only the image is transmitted — location data, account information, and other personal information are not included. Metadata such as GPS coordinates and device information is removed from photos before transmission. The service returns candidate species names and confidence scores, which are used to enrich the AI's ecological interpretation.
Some parts of the App let you speak instead of typing. Voice input uses the speech recognition built into your web browser. Depending on which browser you use, your browser may send the audio to its vendor's servers to convert it to text, or may convert it on your device. We receive only the resulting text, which is treated the same as text you type. We do not receive, store, or have access to the audio itself. Any transmission of that audio is carried out by your browser and is governed by your browser vendor's privacy policy. Your browser controls microphone access and indicates when your microphone is active.
Your conversation content, photos, and location data are sent to Anthropic's Claude API for AI processing. Anthropic processes this data under their Commercial Terms of Service. Under these terms, Anthropic does not use your data for model training and deletes inputs and outputs within 30 days under standard conditions. We may disclose your information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
A core purpose of the App is to build a shared knowledge base — a structured record of ecological observations, environmental conditions, seasonal timing, habitat characteristics, trail conditions, and visit patterns for specific places.
From your interactions with the App, we may extract anonymized structured data such as: species observed, seasonal events (first bloom, migration arrivals, ice-out dates), habitat and trail conditions, weather and environmental conditions, sensory descriptions, visit timing and patterns, and ecological interactions.
Structured data is extracted from your conversations, photos, and session context, then separated from your personal identity. Extracted observations are associated with a location and date but not with your account or identity.
You may request deletion of your raw walk data (conversation logs, photos, session records) at any time. However, anonymized observations and environmental data that have already been extracted and incorporated into the knowledge base are retained as part of the collective record. These observations are not linked to your identity and cannot reasonably be used to identify you.
This approach is similar to how contributions to community science platforms work: your individual observations become part of a shared body of knowledge.
Aggregated, anonymized data from the knowledge base may in the future be used for ecological research, conservation purposes, or licensed to institutional partners such as parks, conservation organizations, or environmental consultants. This may include ecological observations, environmental condition records, trail reports, and visit pattern data. Individual user data is never shared in identifiable form.
Your data is stored using cloud-hosted database and application hosting services located in North America.
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), server-side API key management (API keys are never exposed to your device), and access controls on our database.
No method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
If you delete your account, your personal information and raw usage data will be deleted promptly. Anonymized data that has already been extracted into the knowledge base will be retained as described above.

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the App and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
